The YMCA Bench Press Test
The YMCA bench press test measures muscular endurance rather than maximal strength. You press a fixed barbell — 80 lb for men, 35 lb for women — in time with a metronome at 60 bpm and count how many reps you complete before you can no longer keep pace. Your rep count is compared to published norms for your age and sex.
Questions
YMCA FAQ
Does this measure my 1RM?
No — it measures endurance at a light fixed weight. For a max estimate use the 1RM calculator instead.
What cadence should I use?
Set a metronome to 60 bpm: press up on one beat, lower on the next — 30 full reps per minute. Stop when you fall behind the beat.
