Understanding RPE
RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion) scores how hard a set felt on a 1–10 scale, where 10 means nothing left and 8 means you could have done two more reps. Paired with reps, RPE maps cleanly onto a percentage of your 1RM. This calculator looks up your reps-and-RPE combination on a standard RPE chart, then back-calculates the 1RM.
Questions
RPE FAQ
What does RPE 8 mean?
You finished the set with about two good reps still in reserve (RIR 2). RPE 9 = one left, RPE 10 = none left.
Is RPE better than fixed percentages?
It adapts to daily readiness, which percentages can't. Many lifters use both — percentages to plan, RPE to adjust on the day.
