From Push-Ups to Bench Press
A push-up is essentially a bodyweight bench press: research suggests you lift roughly 64% of your bodyweight in the standard position. By treating your max push-ups as "reps at 64% of bodyweight," we feed that into a one-rep-max formula to estimate the barbell bench it corresponds to. The method works best at modest push-up counts.
Questions
Push-Up FAQ
How much weight is a push-up?
In a standard push-up you press about 64% of your bodyweight; on the knees it's closer to 49%.
Is this accurate for high push-up counts?
Less so. Above ~25–30 reps push-ups test endurance more than max strength, so the estimate becomes optimistic.
